Tips For Easy House Breaking Your Puppy [16 Jun 2008|11:11pm]

Tips For Easy House Breaking Your Puppy
 by: Dy Witt
If you are lucky enough to get a 7-week-old puppy, there is no excuse for any bad habits to develop over his lifetime. Puppies learn INSTANTLY when they are that young, and if you use the proper training methods, gentle but consistent, he will behave like an angel his whole life through.
The most important training, of course, is housebreaking. Boys are easier than girls because exploring outside is their favorite thing. They just cannot get enough of all the new smells out there!
The main key to housebreaking is watching. Watch your puppy AND the clock. Once every hour is not too often on a day he is active and the weather is good. The younger the pup, the more often he needs to go out, mostly because he is growing so fast. He must drink more water to fuel his metabolism than he does as an adult. Also, since he eats three or four times a day, you know what that means.
Watch him for subtle changes. If he is happily chewing his toy, and gets up suddenly with his nose to the floor, move quickly! He is ready to squat! If he has had a nice nap, get him out of his crate and outside right away. If he has just had a good grooming, it stimulates his circulation and guess what? Time to go out again. And of course after a meal, watch him extra close.
Things to remember:
---Do not punish him for mistakes. They are YOUR fault. Every time you take him out he will go, and praise praise and praise! Happy face, laughter, happy noises! He loves your happy face. When he makes a mistake, your frown and your face turned away from him is all the punishment he needs. He will get the point.
---He is learning English, you must use the same phrases over and over. "Good go potty!" "Hafta go potty?" "Wanna go potty?" He can learn in one afternoon that "go potty" means a jaunt outside and your happy face. Whatever phrase you choose, stick with it.
---I cannot recommend strongly enough getting a crate. They truly help with all phases of his training. They make him more secure, provide him with his very own private space and a place for him to hide his favorite toys and chewies. This is even more important if you have other adult dogs in the house.
---Be consistent, always be kind and gentle, and be patient as he learns your language, and your puppy will always look forward to his training sessions. Dogs love to work!

Aquarium Fish Health: Dealing With Cotton Mouth Disease (Mouth Fungus) [14 Jun 2008|10:11pm]

Aquarium Fish Health: Dealing With Cotton Mouth Disease (Mouth Fungus)
 by: Nathan Miller
Cotton Mouth disease also know as Mouth Fungus is a disease your fish can get and it needs to be dealt with quickly. Cotton Mouth disease is not as common as the while spot disease, but, it is highly infectious and contagious.
The victim fish shows a whitish fungus round the cheeks and lips. The lips may become swollen and rot away. Sometimes a rotten strip of lip attached only at one end will move in and out of the mouth as the fish breathes.
Fish infected with Mouth Fungus lose their appetite and their movement become sluggish. If no adequate treatment is given, the whole frontal part of the head may be eaten away finally and the fish dies.
Unless the affected fish is of consideration value, it should be killed before this fatal disease attack sthe other occupants, of the tank. Think about it... is trying to save the life of one fish worth risking the death of the rest of the fish in your aquarium?
But if you insist on keeping the fish or in case the infection has already been passed on to other occupants, the following treatment is advised:
- Swabbing the mouth of the victim fish with a soft cloth dipped in strong salt solution. Then you must then keep the patreat isolated in a bucket or jar containing a strong salt water.
- Try swabbing the lips with a 5 per cent silver mercury preparation.
- Make a solution of Terramycin or Aureomycuin by dissolving 50mg per gallon of water, a rapid cure is expected within 48 hours.
You can try all of the above remedies, but the most common remedy is the popular Methylene blue solution. To perform this remedy the sick fish should be placed in a jar, bucket or a treatment tank into which has been added a methylene per blue to colour the water deep blue.

A Common Cat Litter Box Problem - Feline UTI [14 Jun 2008|09:11am]

A Common Cat Litter Box Problem - Feline UTI
 by: Nancy E. Wigal
Cat litter box problems stem from a variety of sources. One of the most common causes is a feline Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).
Cats tolerate pain pretty well. As a matter of fact, we can be fooled that kitty is feeling fine because she's eating, purring, and snuggling up to us for human love and attention. But at the same time, if she's demonstrating out-of-cat-litter-box experiences, she could be suffering from from a feline UTI. It's up to us to figure it out.
When you know the symptons, it becomes clear that kitty has a problem. She may cry in pain while urinating. She may try to urinate, but little or nothing comes out.
Your cat may groom her privates excessively, and cries while she does it. But the biggest indicator that your cat may be suffering from a feline UTI is blood in her urine.
If your cat has stopped using her cat litter box, and she's urinating on a surface that's white or very light colored, the blood will clearly stand out in the cat urine puddle.
Many cats who suffer from a feline UTI associate the litter box with the pain that comes from this infection. Their kitty logic says if they stop using the cat litter box, maybe the pain won't come around again. This is when you start discovering cat urine puddles all around your home.
If you're one of the lucky ones whose cat is still using her cat litter box while suffering from a feline UTI, the cat litter color and composition may hide the blood. It's always a good idea to closely check your kitty's deposits on a regular basis to make sure she's healthy.
Feline UTIs are quite treatable with antibiotics from your vet. If you suspect a feline UTI, call your vet immediately and follow her instructions for bringing in your kitty for further evaluation.
Once the feline UTI is diagnosed and treated, your cat should regain her good litter box habits again. If not, a short period of confinement for cat litter box re-training is very effective.
Feline UTIs are preventable with a permanent change in your cat's diet. Consult with your vet on how to safely proceed with this.

Anyone wanting to help animals or wanting a pet....

Taken from a site:

About 130 dogs rescued from a puppy mill in Virginia will be up for adoption Friday at the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington NY, an official with the group said.

More than 980 dogs were rescued from a puppy mill in Carroll County, Va., last week by about 25 animal rescue organizations, said Devera Lynn, North Shore's vice president of communications. The league is taking in 132 dogs -- the most of any organization.

"You can tell they've never had any human contact before," Lynn said at the shelter Saturday amid a symphony of barks and howls. "But you can see they've been craving it."

Animal Abuse in Ukraine [01 Nov 2007|11:08pm]

help_animal
www.MatesMaster.com friends and romance network, the site which is constantly involved in Animal Welfare programs, joins forces with Kiev City Society for the Protection of Animals in protest to the inhumane treatment of animals, abuse and cruelty in Ukraine.

About 156,000 stray cats and dogs are annually hurt, abused and killed in Ukrainian citiesand towns. When caught by the dog catchers, some stray animals are used forpainful experiments.
Stray dogs are often bludgeoned or put to death by electricity or caught using an inhumane poison and sometimes die slow, painful deaths. Instead of putting an animal to sleep with the use of euthanasia (i.e. the act of killing an animal painlessly), the animal service uses dithylinum (suxamethonium chloride), a poison which paralyzes the animal and causes it to die of suffocation in a few hours of agony. There is ample evidence that the poor creatures are still conscious and feel all the pain before they die. It is often the case that animals are beaten with legs and metal sticks, whereupon they are buried or burned alive.

Lots of people witnessed animals being tortured and murdered - little kittens tied up in plastic bags and thrown in the river, people intentionally run stray pets over with their cars, newly born puppies dumped on vacant land without their mother and left them to die.
Stories are endless and make hearts of every Human Being bleed.

Authorities of small Ukrainian communities for ever used and are still using different kind of poison - rat poison and recently they "discovered" a new method of killing stray animals - Isoniazidum (Tubazidum) anti-tuberculosis drug causing cheap, but very slow and painful death

Sadly, since I created my community, only 2 people have bothered to join it. One of these was my sympathetic wife. I think this may be largely due to the fact that I have no clue about computers and dont understand how to make my community appear on search pages when people type in a relevant interest. Anyway, I'll cut to the chase. I've created this community to allow users to share their views and opinions on dog behaviour. Having searched LJ extensively I cant seem to find anything similar and think there is a need for this type of community.

dog_behaviouris a community for anybody that has any interest in dogs whatsoever. Whether you have a problem with your dog, have had a similar problem to someone else
and have had success in overcoming it in a certain way, do you want a dog and want to ask a specific question to someone with the experience, whatever your reasons for being
interested in dogs, come and join this community.

Here's my lot enjoying the sun in the garden...they are Kiska (red and white malamute), Kayo (sable and white malamute), Koda (white akita-malamute cross) and finally Buddie,
the border collie...

Oh, if I wasnt allowed to post this in this community, please accept my apologies and duly remove...

I am posting this in all pet communities because I think this is informative for pet lovers. If you would like it deleted please just say so.

I advise you do NOT buy from tagxpress.com / pet-id-tags.com

I recently bought two pet ID tags online from tagxpress.com / pet-id-tags.com, the lettering is uneven, some of the letters are so close together they touch & the brand new out of the envelope tags already have scratches on them. Because I was so unhappy with the product that I received, I emailed the company asking to be able to return the product & be refunded & this is how it went.Collapse )

I'm not sure if this is allowed here but seeing as this community is about animals I figure it does. If it doesn't I apologise.

I received my monthly newsletter from the PETA and was horrified to discover that Heathrow an airline I use frequently import primates and horses through Heathrow to testing labs where they are used in cruel, vicious and unessary experiments and possible death.

On many flights and ferries passangers are aware that down in the cargo near their luggage are terrified, caged lab animals going to god knows where to fate worse than death.

I sent Heathrow airport a letter telling them I would no longer be using their airport till they helped put an end to animal abuse.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT : dogs, birds and guniea pigs are imported and exported from Manchester to their deaths

DOVER PORT : most primates come from Dover

AIR FRANCE : air france fly more lab animals to their deaths than all the other airlines combined.

AIR MAURITUS : air mauritus fly thousands of monkeys to torture them round the world.

AIR CHINA : air china fly monkeys and dogs by the thousand to their deaths

JAPAN AIRLINES : they refuse to stop flying animals to their deaths across the world

EI AI: they regulary fly primates from Isreal to British vivisection labs where they suffer.

Anyone whos an animal lover please don't use any of these airlines.
If you want to write, email or phone to Heathrow, Manchester or Dover Port to complain heres the information

Heathrow Airport, BAA plc, 130 wilton road, london, sw1v 1lq.

Dover Harbour House, Marine Parade, Dover, Kent CT17 9BU

email : pr@doverport.co.uk

Airlines that are safe to use are British Airways, Virginand BMi all refuse to carry laboratory animals.

This isn't a post to discuss if animal testing is right or wrong, this is inform people who care about this subject, so please dont start any discussions about whether its right or wrong

Quick survey, your help needed! [01 Jan 2005|10:35pm]

Pet Owner Survey

Introduction:

This is a very brief survey for any available pet owners that are responsible for purchasing the food for their animals at least part of time. The only additional requirement is that the person filling this out be honest and as helpful as possible, because this survey is in the sole interest of every pet and their loving owners. I’m sure you want to know what this is all about, so I offer this disturbing fact for thought: The National Research Council has discovered “a dog food that is ‘nutritionally correct’ for one breed of dog can be ‘toxic’ for a different breed of dog.” What if yours is one of them?

Purpose:

Inspired by my own beloved Beagle puppy, I’ve realized that I’m not willing to take that risk! After learning about this, I stumbled across a second unsettling fact: There is NO pet food manufacturer that currently produces a breed-specific line of products. Beginning with the proper research (that’s where you come in) my goal is to start my own company producing these important items that are missing from our market. I will develop my own recipes, first for dogs and then hopefully all common household and farmyard animals. Then I will package it and put it on the market for at least the entire United States, hopefully other countries too. If successful, I should be able to help all these animals live longer, healthier lives and save their owners tons of money in the long run because many animal illnesses are caused by nutritionally related problems. I hope to take as little of your time as possible, thank you for your support.

Instructions:

This is a simple survey that should only take a few minutes. Simply
copy and paste the body of the survey into the reply box and fill in your answers. If you prefer to keep your answers private, you can paste it into an email and send it to me at tcmartch@cox.net. Please feel free to answer as completely as possible. I appreciate all your help very much and we’re all ready to get to it!

Survey:

Part One: Demographics

1. What state do you currently live in?
2. What is your age?
3. Please list all pets in your household (name, category: cat, dog, etc. incl. breed, approx. age):
4. How many hours a week do you use the internet and how do you feel about using it for secure purchases?

Part Two: Your Opinion and Information

1. What percentage of the purchases for your pet(s) are made by you?
2. Where do you prefer to make these purchases and why?
3. Has any of your pets ever had a nutritionally related problem that you’re aware of?
4. Were you aware of the issues about manufactured pet foods?
5. If yes, to what extent?
6. Would you be willing to purchase food for your pets on the internet if it proved to be the best choice pertaining to the health of your pet?
7. What would need to be available for you to be willing to purchase this food off the internet (such as up-front information on current facts on this subject, the ingredients and nutritional information of the product, etc.)?
8. How important to you is this subject and the proposition of a solution?

The following questions are for my proposed product (breed-specific pet food):

1. Would you prefer wet or dry food?
2. Would you be ok with a general formula for your breed, or would you need one more stage-specific (puppy, adult, senior, etc.)?
3. Do you believe this idea is important enough to be worth certain hardships like buying online, paying possibly a little more but still reasonably priced, changing from your regular brand, etc.?

Last but not least, please use this space to provide anything else you want to say about any part of this subject:

Conclusion:

Once again, thank you very much and I hope I will be able to
follow through with my dream for the sake of all our furry best friends. Your answers are strictly confidential. Have a great day!

starting a shelter [20 Oct 2004|01:57am]

twisted888
[ mood | determined ]

I can't take it anymore.

I'm going to start a no-kill animal shelter. I don't care how many loans I have to take out and how many people I have to hire. I'll do fundraising with all the free time I have. I don't care what it takes. I can't stand the thought of animals being abused, abandoned, left to die, or euthanized at shitty shelters because they don't have enough room, or because the animal is "unadoptable." Every animal is adoptable, but you have to find the right people. There ARE people out there who will take disabled animals, and there ARE people out there who have the patience to train and love an angry animal. These shelters just aren't looking hard enough.

But I can't do this all on my own. I need help, and lots of it. Please, if you can help an any way, even hook me up with some connection you have, let me know. This is what I will need:

1) Someone to help me get it started with a website. I need to advertise as much as I can so I can get more volunteers.
2) People to help me with ideas for and execution of fundraising. I will need a lot of it. Just think, I'll need to lease a building, buy stuff for cages, phone service, collars and leashes, food... and all the other regular bills to pay.
3) A veterinarian who will do work for free or low prices. The animals I bring in will undoubtedly need veterinary care for any preexisting problems, and I will always spay/neuter animals adopted out, because lord knows I don't want MORE homeless animals.
4) Someone who knows something about buildings. I will need to lease a building to use as the shelter, obviously, and I know nothing about what to look for in a "good building" or anything like that.
5) People to help with construction. I'll need to build cages for the animals, of course, to keep them separated.
6) An attorney to guide me through the legal process. Someone who will do it pro-bono. I have to file for incorporation to get taxes exempted, and a bunch of other stuff.

Please please please give me any help you can. I have to do this, and I will. Maybe I'll be Michigan's youngest person to run a shelter.
Even if you have a thought running through your head like "Well, my uncle is a lawyer, but I doubt he would help," tell me. I'm pretty damn good at getting people to help for a worthy cause. So please, anything you can think of, I would really appreciate it.

I'm in Ypsilanti, MI and I'm hoping to have the shelter between here and Lansing.

Thanks.
~Sarah~
